The rights of those suffered Sumgait fit the frameworks of Madrid Principles, said the coordinator of the Institute for Civil Society and Regional Development (ICSRD) Shushan Khatlamajyan. She mentioned that the Armenians banished from Azerbaijan have the right to apply to the international courts and demand compensation. Providing the Armenian refugees of Azerbaijan with territories around Nagorno Karabakh is also regarded as compensation.
“Today Azerbaijan talks a lot about the necessity of returning the refugees of Azerbaijan to Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh, in the same time forgetting that the Armenians of Azerbaijan have the same rights. Those who survived the Sumgait massacres or who had victims among their relatives will have no wish to return to that city, but should however get a compensation,” he mentioned.
To the question why the international courts pay no attention at this issue and why the authorities do not raise this issue Khatlanjyan answered: “The authorities of Armenia are not sure that the Sumgait issue will find an answer in the international court.”
According to the speaker the responsibility and compensation issues of Sumgait pogroms are still keenly correlated with the Karabagh issue.
