The Middle East Quartet (the UN, the EU, Russia and the US) has strongly denounced Israeli control of East Jerusalem and urged the Israeli government and Palestinians to resume peace negotiations. In a hard-hitting statement after a meeting in Moscow, the Quartet condemned Israel's position and said the status of Jerusalem could only be resolved through negotiations between both parties.
The UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, said, "The Quartet condemns the decision by the government of Israel in East Jerusalem." The Quartet expected that by this fall, the occupation of Palestinian territories begun in 1967 would come to an end. The settlement should result "in the emergence of an independent, democratic, and viable Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital."
The Quartet meeting included Hillary Clinton for the US; Russia's foreign secretary, Sergei Lavrov; Tony Blair, the Quartet's special representative; and Lady Ashton, the EU foreign policy chief. The quartet called on Israel to freeze all settlement activity "including natural growth," to dismantle outposts erected since March 2001, and to "refrain from demolitions and evictions in East Jerusalem." It also appealed for the international community to back their approach.
Despite the fact that Israel is our friend and ally, and a supporter in the war on those who wish to kill us, our government is continuing to pursue a policy of appeasement by working with world powers to create a Palestinian state at great cost to Israel. The plan is for the UN to unilaterally and officially proclaim a Palestinian State with East Jerusalem as its capital. This action will be taken not far from where Islamic terrorists flew fuel-laden airplanes into the World Trade Center Towers and killed 2,752 innocent men, women, and children and almost exactly ten years after that dreadful attack.
We have launched the "Save Jerusalem" Campaign—a national media initiative to sound the alarm to alert Bible-believing Christians to the danger posed by this plan...and to urge them to join us in speaking out against it.
