“Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.” Jonah 1:2
The ancient city of Nineveh was “great” in the eyes of the Lord as the Lord knew the hearts of its people, CorBishop Ashoor Lazar told attendees of the Rogation of the Ninevites lecture at St Hurmizd’s Cathedral in Sydney, Australia.
The lecture, held on Sunday 13 February, the eve of the annual three-day fast, commenced with an evening prayer and attracted a large congregation of faithful, both young and old.
CorBishop Ashoor, parish priest of St Hurmizd’s Cathedral explained the cultural, historical and religious significance of the Rogation of the Ninevites (Baoota D’Ninwayeh), preaching from the book of Jonah.
Faithful church members, said CorBishop Ashoor, should look to the Ninevites as an example of pure, childlike belief without question.
“The Ninevites believed God. They declared a fast, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.” Jonah 3:5
During the Rogation of the Ninevites, St Hurmizd’s Cathedral held morning prayers at 8:30am, followed by Holy Eucharist at 10:15am.
Thanksgiving Holy Eucharist service was held on Thursday 17 February, to conclude the fast.
