The US ambassador to Mexico resigned on Saturday after the latest Wikileaks scandal involving comments criticizing Mexico’s war against drug gangs, reports QNA.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in a statement said it was with “great reluctance” that she had accepted the resignation of Ambassador Carlos Pascual.
QNA noted that Mexican President Felipe Calderon had reportedly expressed his anger to US President Barack Obama over the leaked cables and said he would struggle to still confide in Pascual, who had criticized the Mexican government and infighting between its agencies.
Clinton said Pascual had resigned “based upon his personal desire to ensure the strong relationship between our two countries and to avert issues raised by President Calderon that could distract from the important business of advancing our bilateral interests.”
Pascual would stay in Mexico for a period to help organize an “orderly transition,” Clinton said, QNA reported.
