The Chair of the Board of Trustees of The Colleges and Universities of the Anglican Communion (CUAC), Professor Michael Wright, announced today the appointment of the Reverend Canon James G. Callaway, D.D. as the new General Secretary. He will succeed the Reverend Canon Dr. Donald Thompson after their Triennial Conference in Sewanee, Tennessee, May 22-25.

Canon Callaway, Deputy for Anglican Partnerships at Trinity Wall Street, is widely known throughout the Anglican Communion, particularly for his work in forging enduring links with the Church in Africa and establishing mutual partnerships as a model for ministry.

CUAC is a worldwide association of over 120 institutions of higher education and a network of the Anglican Communion. Its patron is the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams. Along with its predecessor, the Association of Episcopal Colleges, which consists mostly of the Episcopal colleges in the US, CUAC’s mission is promoting cross-cultural contacts and educational programs.

Professor Wright (formerly Vice Chancellor of Canterbury Christ Church University in England) expressed the Board's appreciation of the contribution which the retiring General Secretary, Dr. Thompson, has made to the work of CUAC over the past ten years. In welcoming the appointment of Canon Callaway to the post, Wright stated, "I am in no doubt that CUAC will be well served by Canon Callaway. He brings a wealth of experience to the role and member universities and colleges will relish the opportunity of working with him. The wider Anglican Communion will also benefit from this appointment.”

Canon Callaway, noting that he is eager to extend his ministry of partnership to CUAC’s vital mission as a network of the Anglican Communion, commented, “the CUAC members are a remarkable expression of the Anglican ethos. Strengthening their life together, as well as encouraging the founding of new institutions, will ensure their continuing to shape what it means to be Anglican in the twenty-first century.”

The Reverend Dr. James H. Cooper, Rector of Trinity Wall Street, offered his congratulations to Canon Callaway and deep appreciation for his extraordinary ministry at Trinity. “Jamie is one of the mainstays of the Anglican Communion”, noted Dr. Cooper. “This appointment brings his gifts further into the life and work of the Communion as he continues to strengthen partnerships, convene conversations and support unity in the carrying out of the mission of the Church.”

Reflecting on Callaway’s appointment, Dr. Cooper emphasized that “part of Canon Callaway’s thirty year legacy of ministry has been the establishment of Trinity’s long standing commitments to its global partners. Those commitments will continue unchanged.” The Reverend Matthew Heyd, Director of Faith in Action, for Trinity, will have oversight for all of the parish’s grant making, partnerships and outreach. The Reverend Benjamin Musoke-Lubega will head up the Anglican Partnership team, which also includes Senior Program Officer, Sarah Grapentine. Canon Callaway will continue to serve Trinity as a consultant to Heyd and the Anglican Partnership team.
