Help Barnabas feed Christians in drought-stricken Horn of Africa

Barnabas Fund is today launching an emergency appeal to help Christians affected by what the UN has described as the worst drought in parts of the Horn of Africa for 60 years.

More than 10 million people are in need of aid, and the UN has classified large areas of Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya as a crisis or emergency, while parts of Uganda are also suffering from the drought. The region is experiencing a prolonged failure of rains, causing crop failures and hundreds of thousands of livestock to die. Food prices have risen substantially, and millions of people are now suffering from life-threatening food shortages.

Barnabas Fund helped Christians in Kenya during a previous drought in 2009

Barnabas Fund is sending emergency aid to help Christians affected by the crisis. We have been supporting Christians in the Horn of Africa through a variety of projects over many years, and also helped with relief during previous droughts in the region in 2000 and 2009, so we are well-placed to direct help quickly to Christians in need.

The UN’s Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs has warned that the situation is continuing to deteriorate, and the number of people in need will continue to increase.

UN humanitarian aid chief Baroness Valerie Amos said:

More and more children are malnourished and are suffering from malnutrition but we're also beginning to see examples of adults suffering from malnutrition. This of course is extremely serious because none of us wants to see a return to the kind of famine conditions that we saw in Ethiopia and in that region many years ago.

Hundreds of thousands of people from Somalia have been forced to flee their homes and country as a result of the drought and civil war. Refugee camps in Kenya are severely overcrowded and are struggling to cope with the demand.

Dr Patrick Sookhdeo, International Director of Barnabas Fund, said:

The situation in the Horn of Africa is critical, and our brothers and sisters urgently need our help. We are working with our Christian partners on the ground to channel emergency aid to Christians affected by this crisis. We expect that they will continue to need our help for some time and pray that the Lord will provide for all their needs.

Please Pray For all those who are hungry, thirsty, and fearful for their survival; pray that they will be comforted and receive whatever practical help they need. For aid agencies working on the ground, that they will have sufficient supplies and wisdom to know how best to distribute them. For Christians affected by the crisis, that they will know the Lord to be their provider. Pray that Barnabas Fund, working through our local partners, will alleviate their suffering.

Recognising Reality - Grieve that God is cursed for every catastrophe, but seldom praised for His wonderful Creation. Lament that God makes the news headlines only when man mocks His power or questions His goodness, but tens-of-thousands of God’s acts of mercy, grace, protection, provision and patience receive no headlines. Grieve that the Name of the only righteous Man who ever walked the earth is used as a swear word on T.V. screens and in cinemas across the world. Grieve that God is blasphemed by the very same people who question why God does not restrain the consequences of their own rebellious actions
